Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation - The Loran Award

Segal_and_Michelle_lg.gifOne of our pairings is that of The Hon. Hugh Segal and Michelle Khan. Michelle initially had some reservations about the relationship: "When CMSF contacted me about my mentor, Senator Segal, I was afraid that our very different backgrounds would make it too difficult to find common ground." The pairing turned out to be mutually beneficial, however.

"During our year of acquaintance, Senator Segal has been a constant pillar of support for me," says Michelle. "His advice and guidance in every matter of my life has been invaluable. I feel incredibly fortunate to have him as my mentor."

As Senator Segal explains, the feeling is mutual: "The Mentoring Program has given me a remarkable opportunity to work with a very bright and engaging student, offering advice and counsel as she sorts her way through interesting challenges and choices. Loran scholars are a very special breed in terms of the mix between academic achievement and community interest. This enriches the mentorship immensely."

Thanks in part to her mentor, Michelle worked at the Senate of Canada in summer 2006 on a project examining how rural poverty in eastern Ontario impacts on access to regular healthcare for low income Ontarians.
