Loran Scholars are selected for their character, commitment to service, and leadership potential. We expect these talented young people to take advantage of the opportunities that arise from receiving a Loran Award, both during and after their undergraduate studies, and to give back to their communities a multiple of what they receive from CMSF. Currently numbering 221, with 184 located in Canada, 22 in the United States of America and 15 based internationally, Loran alumni are active in diverse fields of endeavour. While they have chosen different careers, they share a common commitment to contributing to their communities.
To date, our methods of selection and stewardship are proving to be effective. Ninety-three per cent of Loran scholars successfully complete their undergraduate studies while maintaining high academic standards with demonstrated leadership and continued service to the community. In terms of advanced studies, 40 per cent of Loran scholars have earned professional or graduate degrees. In terms of external recognition of outstanding potential, eleven Loran scholars have been chosen as Rhodes scholars, two others have been named Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 and one was named one of WXN’s Top 100 Women (young leaders category). Many Loran alumni remain engaged with CMSF as assessors, interviewers, or as mentors to current scholars. Two alumni serve on CMSF’s board of directors and two are members of the staff.
