"CMSF’s encouragement to take meaningful risks inspired me to take on a number of amazing challenges, such as an unforgettable summer spent in an aboriginal community in northern Yukon. Still today, that message of taking meaningful risks shapes every aspect of my life."
- Sarah Michael, 1993 Loran scholar
The summer program is meant to enrich the undergraduate experience for our scholars by encouraging constructive use of summers. Scholars have access to up to $7,500 and extensive networks to create four different summer opportunities:
- An enterprise internship: scholars develop skills in a business environment. Scholars learn about profit-making ventures and leadership in the business world. For example, 2006 W. Garfield Weston Loran scholar Caroline Crawford worked as an assistant to a vice-president at Richardson Capital in Winnipeg.
- An personal/community development summer:
Scholars work or volunteer on community endeavors in Canada or abroad, or undertake training or language study with the goal of bolstering future community engagement. For example, in the summer of 2008, Jesse Robson (2005 Dominion Loran scholar) interned with Zip Zap Circus School in South Africa, and taught circus skills to HIV positive children.
- A public policy internship:
scholars gain experience with Canada's policy-making process in its partisan and/or non-partisan forms. Whether they work for a government department, NGO or a political party, scholars learn how public policy is developed, and to learn the basics of policy analysis. For example, in 2008 Kathryn Lennon (2006 BMO Capital Markets Loran scholar) worked as a summer student in Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami’s Health and Environment Department, researching the potential impacts of carbon taxation on the Inuit.
- An orientation summer:
In the summer before they begin university, scholars gather together to complete a five-day outdoor expedition in Algonquin Park. Led by Outward Bound, the expedition focuses on leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.
